No. 6 – June 2013
Please
join fellow cattlemen at the regular monthly dinner meeting at the Cooperative
Extension Center on Thursday, June 13. Dinner starts at 7 p.m. Charlie Easton will give us an update of the
Earth Roast Eve activities. There are many ways to contribute to the Earth
Roast’s success – come and work or just come and eat!

Editor’s note: This is an
abbreviated edition of the MoosNews – I’m experimenting with a different format
for the print version; the electronic version may undergo some changes as well.
In the interest of time, however, I decided to go back to the old version so
you wouldn’t be reading about how you can help at Earth Roast…AFTER the Earth
Roast had come and gone!

Minutes from the May Meeting
Granville
County Cattlemen gathered on May 9, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the
Cooperative Extension office for dinner and regular monthly meeting. Following dinner, Paul Westfall presented a
program on insects affecting cattle. He discussed especially the different
types of flies affecting cattle and options for treating. He emphasized the
importance of reading labels carefully before using any insecticide.
President
Kay Stark presided over the business session. Minutes of the April meeting were
approved. Treasurer’s report was accepted as presented. Profits were noted from
the last cattle sale concession and it was announced that the next sale will be
in the Fall. A gift of $1,000 from E.B.
Harris Auction Company was acknowledged. A gift is being forwarded to the State
Foundation in memory of Kathleen Walker.
Granville
County will host the 5-County Beef Tour in September. Volunteers are needed to
help with planning and serving lunch.
More
info will be forthcoming on the Ag Advisory Council.
Updates
and minor adjustments for the June 14 Earth Roast were discussed.
The
meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully
submitted,

From the President
Cattlemen:
I
hope we are all in high gear with our big yearly fundraiser just about here.
This is our 40th annual Earth Roast so let’s keep the tradition up by making
this our biggest and best. This will let people know the beef industry is still
alive and doing well. Please make some calls to remind people and let’s get out
and sell some tickets! Remember, this is your association, your chance to help
us promote beef, to help promote our scholarships and help show our young
people we really care about helping promote 4H and FFA in our schools.
People
in this area have been banking on agriculture for many years so please help to
keep it alive. We need a lot of help and it will take a lot of hard work to
pull this off. Thursday morning, we’ll be cleaning and wrapping potatoes. Then
we’ll wrap the roasts at 1 p.m., put them in the prepared pit over the hot
rocks and then cover it.( We’ll give you an update that evening at the monthly
meeting at the extension office.) Come
Friday morning, we’ll be cooking potatoes, then a crew will be off to the pit
to uncover the roasts and begin to slice them. This is a quick overview of what
will happen in a short period of time, but I haven’t even mentioned all the
other tasks undertaken –making sauce, cleaning equipment and area, putting up
signs, marking off parking, buying meat and supplies, getting take-out line and
eat-in area ready, preparing beans, but most important - advertising and selling of tickets. And don't
forget cleaning up at the end of all this fun! It is work, but it also is FUN –
come be a part.
Hope
to see all Thursday AND Friday.
Your
president,
Kay

By now many of you
may have seen his poster-size photo hanging in the window of TeamCare, but GCCA
member David Blackwell was featured as the April customer of the month by the
local gym and fitness center. David can be seen most days working out on the
equipment – as if the dairy business isn’t ENOUGH exercise! Congratulations to
David for being recognized by TeamCare!

Read N.C. State vet Mark
Alley’s article in the June/July edition of Progressive
Farmer magazine. The article, titled “Deworming Is Not Guesswork” discusses
the importance of having a good worming program for your herd. Dr. Alley and
beef and forage specialist’s Matt Poore’s 2007 study tested various deworming
products and their effectiveness. Dr. Alley and Matt Poore are both friends of
Granville County cattle producers – it’s good to see their names in a national
publication!
