GCCA represents Granville County's diverse beef industry. GCCA affairs are managed by aBoard of Directors elected by the general membership. The board also serves as an advisory committee to the Granville County Cooperative Extension Service, providing direction and support to livestock and forage-related educational programs. General members are encouraged to serve on one or more standing committees that focus on long-term planning and project implementation.
Member Benefits...
Members have access to Association-owned cattle handling equipment, and many Association members are willing to others work their herds. Members are encouraged to participate in a comprehensive educational program and maintain effective networks with other cattlemen having similar interests and needs. Granville County Cattlemen are eligible for various awards, and their youth family members are given added consideration when applying for the GCCA Scholarships at NC State and Vance Granville Community College.
Our Industry...
Granville County ranks 24th in North Carolina in total beef production, maintaining 11,500 head of cattle on more than 250 small, family-owned farms. Most of these farms produce commercial feeder calves that are shipped to major corn-growing areas of the United States for finishing.
In addition, there are several purebred beef operations in Granville County. They raise quality bulls and replacement heifers used to improve the genetics of commercial beef herds across the Southeast. Several major breeds are represented, including Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Shorthorn, Simmental, Polled Hereford, and Balancer.
Our industry contributes $6 million each year to Granville County's economy through farm gate sales. A growing portion of this economic engine is the emergence of farms involved in direct marketing of beef, including "natural", "grass-fed", or "pasture raised".
Our Mission...
The mission of GCCA is to support and strengthen the local beef industry by educating our members on various aspects of beef cattle management. We want each member to become more knowledgeable and profitable in their beef enterprise! We also seek to support youth who will be providing leadership to the cattle industry of the future.
Our Activities...GCCA achieves its mission through a variety of educational programs and activities, which include: seminars conducted by industry professionals, hands-on demonstrations & workshops, sales & shows, newsletters, field days, and educational tours.
Our Commitment to Youth...
GCCA demonstrates its commitment to youth by supporting 4-H Livestock programs, Granville County FFA chapters, and junior livestock shows. In addition, GCCA awards scholarships to deserving young men and women from Granville County who are pursuing a college degree with emphasis in Agriculture. Priority consideration is given to applicants who are associate members of GCCA or whose parents or grandparents are active members.
